My New Free Knockout Rose Garden!

I didn't get any deals posted today because I spent the entire day working outside. A few days ago I noticed someone offering free Knockout Rose Bushes on a local on-line yard sale site. I claimed them and made arrangements to go and dig them up.

I should note that I know next to nothing about gardening and even less about roses. However, I have been envisioning a colorful garden oasis in my backyard since we moved in 4 years ago. Luckily I had my two teenagers (Jake, age 17 and Bridgette, age 13) to provide some free labor!

We started out about 9:00 am by heading over to Southern States for supplies and advice. Then we got to work. Two of the rose bushes were next to the side of a house, which made it difficult to get behind them and dig.

Jake digging roses

It took about 2 hours of hard labor before we got them out and loaded them into the back of the truck.

We took them to the back yard and inserted them on our pre-dug holes, added layers of peat moss and dirt, then watered them well.

After a break for lunch we went back to tackle the other two. They were even more difficult to dig out, as they were in a small space without much room to maneuver, by the front porch.

We finally got them out by towing them out with the truck!

Then, back to the house we went and carried them to the back yard.

If my husband hadn't arrived home from work about this time to help, we never would have gotten the job done.

Finally, we laid mulch around the roses and finished the job about 5:00 pm. Boy were we exhausted and dirty. I spent $16.00 on 2 bags of fertilized peat moss and 1 large bag of mulch, so my roses weren't completely free, but they were pretty darn cheap!!

You are supposed to transplant roses in the winter when they are dormant, but the donator wanted them gone ASAP. Moving during the growing season is a big shock to roses, and we lost some of the roots when we hauled them out of the ground with the truck. If they survive, I will prune them down very short next spring, put in a flower bed, and post more pics then.

Harris Teeter Pharmacy Deal & Pizza Monday

Today I ran into Harris Teeter so that I could do this No Beer Purchase Required (NBPR) mail in rebate for $3.00 on the purchase of any fresh pizza:

Blue Moon NBPR Rebate form

I went today, because Harris Teeter has a special price for deli pizza on Mondays. Normally they are $11.99, but on Monday they are only $7.99. I had never ordered from the deli before, so I didn't realize there would be a 20 minute wait. I didn't have any other shopping to do, so I ran over to the recycling center for 15 minutes, where I collected this haul:

Dumpster Diving Haul

When I got back to Harris Teeter I noticed this sign, advertising a $20.00 store credit for every new or transferred prescription:

Harris Teeter Pharmacy Offer

The deal is only for customers who have not previously used a Harris Teeter pharmacy. I can't take advantage since I got $200 in free groceries last year with this deal. However, if you haven't used the Harris Teeter pharmacy before and your store is participating, this is a very easy way to get free food!

My Stockpile Supper - Mexican Inspired Salad with Refried Beans and Rice

Here is what I did with the items I got at Food Lion last week. My husband, Jeff. watched me unpack the groceries and suggested this "recipe"- then stated that I should give him credit on my blog!

I shredded half a head of iceberg lettuce and tossed it with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. Meanwhile, my daughter Bridgette chopped the chicken into strips.

I cooked the chicken with a packet of taco seasoning that I had previously gotten for free, according the directions on the back.

In another pot I made 2 packets of Mexican Rice that were free from Harris Teeter.

And I emptied this can of refried beans that I found in my pantry into a serving dish and warmed it up in the microwave. I can't remember where I bought it, but I am pretty sure that it was free.

Then, the cooked chicken went on top of the salad and dinner was served!

The salad was delicious with the Guacamole Ranch Wish-bone dressing that I got at Food Lion. Thanks for the yummy idea, Jeff!

Reach Toothbrush Deal at Walgreens Gets Better!

Today I stopped into Walgreens to do the Reach toothbrush money maker deal that I posted about HERE. The coupon beeped "no matching item found" although the toothbrushes were clearly the correct item, so the cashier pushed it through.

Apparently there is also a store coupon for $1.00 off Reach toothbrushes in the Walgreens "What to do for Cold & Flu" booklet. If you could find that, you would only pay tax for the toothbrushes and then get back a $2.00 RR.

I paid $1.17 out of pocket with tax, then got my $2.00 Register Reward plus this nice catalina for $5.00 off a $20.00 purchase of almost anything in the store that doesn't expire until July 30, 2013!

Now I need to come up with a $20.00 transaction to use it. I will definitely get another set of Reach toothbrushes and some Butterball Turkey Bacon. It's on sale this week for $1.29, so just 74 cents with the 55 cent coupon from the 6/30 Smart Source insert!

My Spectacular Safeway Shopping Trip!

Here is a photo of my shopping trip to Safeway today, where I spent $5.94 including tax!  My total was $66.83 before Club savings, Just4U savings, and coupons, for a savings of 91 percent!!

The $5.00 off $15.00 frozen purchase that I loaded to my card as outlined here came off automatically, and I also located the $5.00 off $15.00 frozen purchase coupon in the store ad and used it.

The ice cream total was $15.00 and I had the $10.00 worth of coupons above coming off as well as two coupons for $3.00 off 3 Breyer's ice creams from today's paper. Since the coupons totaled $16.00 on my $15.00 purchase, I threw in 2 Celeste pizzas on sale for 88 cents each, just to be safe. I totally forgot to get the FREE Popsicles, which would have made for a better deal!!

My first Ocean Spray juice coupon for $1.00 scanned just fine, since I was spending $1.98 on juice, but the second one beeped "coupon value exceeds item" and the cashier returned it to me. I still got a great deal with 2 bottles of juice for 98 cents or 49 cents each! By the way, there were no tags under the Ocean Spray juice at my store to indicate that it was on sale.
