Walgreens Balance Rewards Program

Walgreens logo

Walgreens has joined the ranks of CVS and Rite Aid by requiring you to get a card in order to take advantage of their sale prices. I signed up for the new Walgreens Balance Rewards program yesterday. I couldn't believe how easy it was. The cashier asked for my phone number, used that to pull my name and address up on a screen somehow, scanned the card to activate it, and I was done!

The new program allows you to earn points for certain purchases which you can later redeem for other purchases. Your point balance will appear at the bottom of your cash register tape (CRT). Here is a chart showing what they are worth to you:

Some important features of the Balance Rewards program:

Earning points
  • Points can be earned for both in store and on-line shopping.
  • If you need to spend a certain amount to earn points, you must do it all in one transaction. Your spending will not "track" over time.
  • The amount necessary to earn points is before manufacturer's coupons, RR's and in-ad coupons, but after coupons from the Walgreens monthly Savings Book.
  • Most items that you buy to earn points have no limit, but if there is a limit, it is per transaction.
  • You will not earn points on items that you purchased with points.
  • There is no limit to the number of points you can earn.
Redeeming points
  • You may not use points on prescriptions, stamps, alcohol, gift cards, phone cards, tobacco or money orders.
  • Points must all be redeemed in one transaction. If your total is less than the amount of points you have, you will forfeit points.
  • Points are good for 3 years, so long as you shop at Walgreens every 6 months with your Balance Rewards card.
  • Points cannot be redeemed in increments larger than 40,000 in one transaction.
  • Points can be used to pay for tax!
About Balance Reward Points and Register Rewards:
While you cannot earn points when buying items with points, you can use RR's to buy items and earn points AND you can use points to buy items that earn RR's.

Other ways to earn points:
  • Earn 500 points for every prescription you have filled at the pharmacy (so long as they are not paid for my Medicaid, Medicare, or Tricare).
  • Earn 10 points for every mile that you walk in the Walk with Walgreens program.
If you want to earn points for walking, you will need to go online and link your Balance Reward account with your Walk with Walgreens account!

Special Offer for AARP Members
If you belong to the AARP, you can link your AARP card and your Balance Reward account to get bonus offers!

2 Day Limitless Points!
Today and tomorrow, November 16th and 17th only, you can earn 5,000 Balance Rewards points every time you spend $30.00 on almost anything in-store or online using your Balance Rewards Card. The $30.00 must be spent in one transaction (and the deal doesn't work if you spend $60.00 - you won't get double the points).  Since the bonus points you earn equate to $5.00, it's like you are spending only $25.00 - before coupons, of course!
